Hello out there in "blogland" This be yer ole buddy "Steveo" Just thought i would fill you in on some things I have been doing, since i haven't blogged for quite awhile...
Felt good this morning walking around in our "fair" weather here in Southern Ca...it has been pretty chilly, but today is a beautiful day..very little or no smog, and the temps are nice right now...
One of the things I've been doing is taking a few supplements(note:check with your doctor before taking any vitamins or supplements)
Had a test awhile back saying that I was low on Vitamin "D" so been taking some D3, about 2000 IU's a day..It is helping me and I feel a lot better. Also felt a bit of congestion coming on last night, and took a zinc...it helped me a great deal, so yes, I am taking certain supplements, but trying not to over do it...
Recently I have discoverered a national treaure in the music and show biz department...his name is Oscar Levant(deceased)...the guy was a brilliant wit, and a great musician..trying to see what i can find on youtube
with him....He was a self professed neurotic, and shared this side of him with the public...nevertheless, his performances of his friend George Gershwin's music are brilliant. I enjoy his quirky personality...Looking around from some memorabilia on him, bu found only one thing..an autographed pic of him that was pretty pricey.
Let's see, what else do i know?
Been catching some of the presidential candidates on TV and this is also quirky...Im wondering how this is going to turn out and who will be our next "president"
Been getting into a little "stamp" collecting..but not "majorly"..I ordered a few "plate blocks" of a some stamps that I admire...A plate block is at least 4 stamps that are connected together with perforations around the edges, and have the "plate block" number above...The stamps I have purchased are not by any means rare, or even expensive, but its nice to have a few that I like. Ordered the 1941 30c Airmail Stamp showing a C-30(Lockheed Constellation aeroplane), a plate block of 4 1952 NATO stamps, and also a plate block of 4 7c airmail stamps showing the figure (underbelly outline) of an early jet..this stamp in the red varitey..the earlier one which was identical but with the color "blue" came out in 1958.
NOw a bit of a gripe...when phoning certain places lke CVS pharmacy, and being put on hold, the music that is played while waiting is SUPER loud...blowing my ear out, and also filling the room with a lot of noise...I wonder what genius thought of that! lol
The holiday season has come on so quickly, I am caught by surprise, and am trying to "Get ready" for the eventualities that come along with this...buying a few cards, sending some gifts,
making a reservation at a restaurant, etc....all in the last 7 days! I remember readng abot Ed McMahon JOhnny Carson's announcer...he waited till the last 24 hours before doing anything.
Sent a package out to Columbia City Indiana, but it went straight to Dallas...this annoyed me, and i got on the horn with USPS..af first they said it was a mistake they would correct...later they said that during the heavy holiday season...there is an overflow of mail that is routed to what we call "way stations" Dallas was one of them...then after that the item showed up in Michigan, and then finally Columbia City, Indiana...I had no idea that this was one of the things that happens...
WEll anyway, I want to wish you all a good holiday and perhaps will blog again before New Years, but if I dont, Happy New Year to all of you out there...
Best,
Hey Y'all....
Thought I'd chime in a bit...Gf tells me she is getting tired of certain "cooking shows" that are turning into about 80% gossip/talk and very little concentration on cooking....these are on the "regular channels"....
I guess the almighty "Ratings" require them to act part time like a female Johnny Carson...
Was sitting in the eye doctors office the other day, and the big screen TV was playing some old episodes
of Green Acres...I never realized how good the writing was...excellent, fun show!
The weather in this section of suburbia Los Angeles has been horrendous this week! lots of humidity and unstable weather...with only sprinkles of the very thing we need..RAIN!
Thinking of Disneyland right now, and how the new or current management has decided they no longer "need" the Disneyland Band anymore...I mean I thought Main Street and that area was about nostalgia and the turn of the century....oh well, just another "Screwed up thing" about that park, which has been out of whack for years, and of course its costs an arm and a leg to go there...about 100.00 per pop....I would like to go there, just to see some of the things that have been there time immemorial.. The Castle, parts of Main St. etc.
..Was reading about some "dumb laws" that were enacted in certain states way back in the day...for example It is illegal to sing out of tune in a nightclub in I believe the state is North Carolina...and in Idaho a man going with hi fiance is not allowed to buy her over 50 pounds of chocolate...I dont think theres any danger of me dong that, as the expense of chocolates are pretty high..just walk into a "See's candy store and try to buy a box...$$$$$
I never understood why may parents and grandparents were up in arms back in the day over escalating
prices, while as a kid I only knew the current price and scoffed at them....now I completely understand...
To go to a fast food place you are going to burn a 10.00 bill just to get one meal!

I get nervous dealing with some of the young folk who give me my change for a larger bill offered to them
although I should relax. The amount of change is shown on the cash register...HOWEVER counting it back is another matter! lol
Have I been giving you a piece of my mind? I hope so..lol just offering up my thoughts on certain things..Gonna run along...plant ya now, dig ya later!
They Only Take Cash

Hi,
Blogging today about this wonderful place near where I live. It is a good "burger joint"...I will not use the name, but after going there and running through the specials list with the cashier(I wanted a "to go" order)
I ordered, and then pulled out one of my "credit cards"...She said "we only accept cash!"(I had forgotten)
Well, I am surprised, as all of the other businesses around here on the same block take cards...but not this place!
My question is this...how would you feel about this? Would you go in there and patronize the place?

Did what? lol Im talking about a guy who was active in the
music biz in the 60's and back...He was a producer and arranger for
Walt Disney Productions and did some versions of Disney songs. Right
now, Im focusing on "For NOw, For Always"...the love theme from the
original 1960 "Parent Trap".
Tutti Camarata(May 11, 1913 - April 13, 2005) Arranged and conducted a wonderful choral/orchestra version of this tune in the early 60's realeased on Buena Vista Records, Walt's recording arm.
Hey, the guy could write an arrangement! Here he gives that elite Disney sound with Strings, Horns, Woodwinds, and the great Disney Chorus sound. To say he was a genius in music would be very accurate!
I can hear some of the Disney alumni singers in there, NAmely Thurl Ravenscropft singing bass...Lets see, Im especially enamored of the instruemtal opening...with midrange strings starting out plaintively, that repeating the melody an octave higher in the 2nd bar....(they go high...)then some 4 dramatic chord progressions that lead into the main vocal. The whole thing is first rate from the opening note to the last part ending with that Snow White sound orchestrally...Acknowledgement goes to the unknown orchestrator that fleshed out Tutti's sketch...probably Bobby Hammack or Walter Sheets.
This is a "lost" sound..but Im glad I found it on youtube, and you can hear it also...
here's the link...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyWUgTJ1kqc
Warning....The song is very adult sounding and romantic...if you like old time love ballads you will love it, otherwise skip it!rex "steveo" mojohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07424729561472845469noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12385193.post-24068302444035078642011-04-05T14:01:00.000-07:002011-04-05T14:09:23.581-07:00William Lava TV and Film Composer(1911-1971)William Lava TV and Film Composer(1911-1971)

Today I want to rap about one of my favorite tv backround composers of yesteryear..
HIs name was William Lava....A creative, yet true name..I first became familiar with the name William Lava when I started watching television programs produced by WB for ABC-TV in the early 60's.
His name most often popped up on the Television program Cheyenne, a beautiful tv western starring Clint Walker.
MAny an afternoon on rerun when televeion was mainly black and white, and didnt mind showing reruns of non color tv shows, I would get installments of preveiously aired programs of Cheyenne...so for an hour I'd sit and watch as "Cheyenne Bodie" drifted through various towns and situations often taking temporary jobs - sometimes as a lawman, sometimes as a bonty hunter, whatever he could find unusally involving
interaction with people. During the action, or tense parts of the programs Mister Lava's score graced my 12" audio speaker located directly below this humongous 27" television set, and provided some fat, turgid brass and string chords, most often utilizing a low piano chord to meld the dissonance together...
Often during a chase, his real "b" like fast moving violin figures rhapsodized over indians attacking a fort, or bad guys riding horses shooting at each other...wonderful stuff!
Not only did he score the episodes, but at the beginning and end we got to hear his wonderful theme song sung by the Disney bunch, Thurl Ravenscroft, Bill Lee and company.(4 or 5 guys intoning in unison "Cheyenne, Cheyenne"...)

Later on having become a composer myself, and trying to investigate the backround of Bill Lava, it is seen that not much is found on the web about him...just the sketchiest of information which I will present here.
Willam B. LAva was born on Mar 18, 1911 in St.PAul, Minn.and attended Northwestern University, probably in the late 20's...Arriving in Hollywood in about 1936, Bill proceeded to score many westerns at Republic, and later did much composing, often uncredited at WB. Bill also worked in radio. One of the partial scores he worked for at WB was "Action In The North Atlantic"...
In the mid fifties Disney hired him to write music for the Mickey MOuse Club action series, such as The Hardy Boys, as well as some scores for Zorro.
During the period of the late fifties, thru the mid 60's he became inundated scoring many tv shows for WB including the Theme and scores for Cheyenne and F Troop, while at the same time taking over the composing chores for the WB Cartoons. Not only THAT, but also working for Paramount as a music supervisor for BOnanza!
When mentioning him to various luminaries at the WB music dept, it was told to me that he was not a great composer in the sense of a luminary such as Erik Korngold, but was a great technician and good "b" film man..well I agree that he was a great "b" film man, and if you love the sound of these old scores, I dont think one would want someone like Korngold or Steiner scoring them The music suits me just fine in this genre.
In his personal life, William Lava was a portly man who was a staunch anti-communist. Lava became known as an outspoken critic of the Cuban Revolution. He spoke in favor of direct military action against the Castro regime, continuing to protest in this manner from 1959 until his death.
Bill lava died on Feb 20 1971, leaving, in my opinion a big hole in the art of creating great blowout "b" music for tv....A few of the films he also worked on was
action in The North Atlantic, PT 109, and The Chamber of Horrors(House of Wax II)Creature From The Black Lagoon, etc
I never knew Bill Lava, but I miss him! I knew him through the character of his music.rex "steveo" mojohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07424729561472845469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12385193.post-65858285417859615102011-01-25T20:08:00.000-08:002011-01-25T20:59:47.536-08:00Ted Williams-Echoes of the Golden VoiceTed Williams-Echoes of the Golden Voice

As most of you may know, it was only a few weeks ago that a homeless fellow
named Ted williams was photographed holding a sign up on a highway
in or around Columbus, Ohio..when a person with a cameraphone asked him to recite some golden throated announcing lines..as the sign Ted was holding up read "out of work announcer needs work"..or some such thing...after that, the photographer posted Ted reciting some lines on Youtube, an internet video site, and the fame of the homless man skyrocketed....Suddenly the nation adopted Mr. Williams as their mascot, and have been following his story.
Since that time, Ted has been offered various announcing jobs, and appeared on many talk shows....but the most pertinent one was Dr. Phil..it was here where the doctor
proceeded to try to help Ted recognize the whys and wherefores of his homelessness, including a drug and alcohol problem....confrontations with his relatives, many of whom he abandoned, for whatever reason, and coming face to face admitting his own addictions.
This turned into a "saga" where Ted would alternately show and not show up for various tapings...even getting deatained by the police after a fight with his daughter at his Hollywood hotel room. The bottom line from Dr. Phil was to try and get Ted into rehab, of which some anonymous benefactor would pay to have this newly found internet star attend and complete.
After agreeing to enter rehab on his own volition, approximately 2 weeks later Ted "jumped ship" and took off for parts unknown...
MAny folks, including me, were following closely Ted's progress and rooting for him to pull his life together and get clean and sober, and kicking "butt" on the annoucning world...just as many, according to posts on the website TMZ.com, have said that Ted is a worthless person, who doesn't deserve any accolades or help, and is just a bum(once a bum, always a bum they state), and that "we told you so" and "go back to your freeway underpass and be the bum you are..."
So goes the divided feelings of the general public about this man who has the god given talent to do wonderful announcing, but falls, or has fallen back on his proimises to "Get straight"
As a few, but very few people who posted on TMZ, understand the nature of addiction- getting clean and sober after 20 years of being on the street -it's not all that simple...Its a long and arduous road.
It is going to take time, if it happens at all...and I, for one, am hoping that although Mr. Williams has taken a step backwards by leaving rehab, that he will
somehow get back on the right track and go back and finish up...
No one(except a chosen few, obviously) knows where Ted went, or where he is at the present time....
MAny say they know where he is...back on the street getting high...I'm afraid they are probably correct...as the newfound fame was too sudden and the pressure to great...thus treading familiar habits and ground may at the moment be more comforting...
but somehow I can't help feeling that it isn't over for Ted just yet, and that he still may pull out of this....I am rooting and praying for him...
Hope springs eternal.rex "steveo" mojohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07424729561472845469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12385193.post-13304596665971756622010-11-29T11:08:00.000-08:002010-11-29T11:17:15.048-08:00THEY HAD IT RIGHT IN THE BEGINNING(BUT DIDNT KNOW IT)THEY HAD IT RIGHT IN THE BEGINNING(BUT DIDNT KNOW IT)

Today Im going to talk about "early" televsion, circa the late 40's, when tv was in its infancy...
Many technological innovations were not yet invented or discovered, and the immediacy of tv(which mostly "live") was WONDERFUL!
There were lots of mistakes, and they were done live on tv, and we, the audience rooted for those people, and enjoyed the immediacy of the medium. As Tv "perfected"
itself down the line, thru the invention of editing on Video tape, most programs became "Sterile"...no unexpected things happening in tv, just grew into the robotic mess that it is now...
Everything is perfected....if someone makes a mistake..the tape stops, and they correct it...We know days and weeks in advance what programs will be on, and the nature of these programs..
About the only thing "live" today is the news...and the cute little comments that the commentators do during their thing on camera..other than that it is super boring...
Television, I believe was meant to be "live" and as such, it would be a little more expensive to produce, but well worth it.This medium cries out for that.
I would someday like to see(if I ever became a millionaire I would do it)an all LIVE TV station...where the rules are no tape or film..
Ever thing must be done crude, as it was in the early days...if we did have film or tape, it would have to be limited to showing old movies, in a format with a host something like Ben Hunter's tea time afternoon movie on KTTV 11 in Los Angeles...Ben, a charming man, was a little reminicsant in character of the
older Frank Sinatra, sat and chatted with guests, or you the audience during breaks of from the film..also Live "hawking" of products were done, as in the past from such pioneers as JOe KArbo(again KTTV- "ALL Night Movies")etc..
There were times when there were technical problems, and we got a slide with recorded music, etc. till the problem was cleared up. Even this was "exciting"...tv was not alwatys a 24/7 thing..and so it was a thrill to know that a station would
sign on and off, and to this we would look forward.I swear tv can be resuurected, as long as the desire to bring it back alive, the way I, and many others believe it should be...
and that is "LIVE" In fact the station could be called "live"
Steveorex "steveo" mojohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07424729561472845469noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12385193.post-42554466006627264712010-10-31T19:36:00.000-07:002010-10-31T20:27:23.685-07:00Thinking of 2 sounds from yesteryearSaying of the Day:
Don' count your bowling balls before they're hatched, Fred!-Barney Rubble

Blog of the Day:
Haven't posted in awhile, but thinking tonight about one of TV's Greatest theme songs, as written by composer Fred Steiner..."The THeme from Perry Mason" turns out to be one of the best TV ever had to offer. This, from a courtroom drama TV Show that ran on CBS from 1957 to 1965, featuring Raymond Burr.
Ive been listening to Fred's arrangment...There is a middle 4 bar part on the vilolins which is very chilling....it is comprised of Violins A and B interweaving to form different intervals...4th's, 5th's, octaves, tritones, etc...It is instructional to seek out these intervals and play them on the piano!
I cant get enough of it...its quite wonderful...This theme was called "PArk Avenue Beat" and is done in 12/8 time...with a triplet feel, like the 50's (actually it was from the 50's - written in '57 - and when I asked Fred back in 1973 what he was thinking of he said "R&B"....

Then in the very early 60's came a wonderful vocal sound from The Four Seasons..a New Jersey doo wop group, that evolved into a hit making machine...
I love the vocals on the records. They were usually arranged by their Bass Player Nick Massi(now deceased)..and the sound could be somewhat dense, based on the voicings, and the tessitura, or lay of the parts...add Frankie Valli's soaring high parts...and you had a great "sound".They were the only groupl able to produce hits before AND During the Beatles invasion of AMerica(along with the Beach Boys)
Ok, just thinking about these 2 sounds tonight!

Steveo

visit my other blogs

DailySteveo

and

Mimizanrex "steveo" mojohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07424729561472845469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12385193.post-3686128863375063272010-09-10T13:54:00.000-07:002010-09-10T13:58:39.829-07:00The Town WailSaying of the Day:
Early to rise, early to bed, makes a man healthy but socially dead.

Blog of the day:
The Town Wail

USA Today ran an article yesterday about the return of noisy town sirens...WEll, back "in our time"...in small towns accross America we had some sirens that were usually mounted somewhere on the court house, or the nearby fire department..
and these were heard regularly on various occasions..often at night when one was asleep or drifting off to dreamland...The 10 Pm Curfew horn was one of them..
There has been a debate about the tradition of the use of these noisy, wailing sirens in small townas accross America, based on the noise they create..some people like them 'cause they contimute tradition, and others feel they are noisy and
archaic, and should be eliminated.
As I said, one signal was for the "10 o'clock curfew" alert, for folks who were underage, and that they had like 15 minutes to get back home after the wailing of the siren sounded.
In this era of cel phones, and IPhones, etc.. most kids already know when it's time to go home(if their parents have rules for them)...
The sirens in these towns, including one in my Ohio "home town" had long been used. Since I havent lived there for years, I dont know whether the sirens still go off or not..
but I do know(and i've blogged about this before) that they created terror in my heart as a young teen in the "cold war" era...
You see there were different "lengths and warblings"..one meant a "fire"...another the curfew, and yet another meant "take cover..nuclear war eminant.."
It was this last one that scared the holy SH** out of me, as I layed there in bed only about a block from these sirens..one could never tell what the signal was till the thing got cranked up in motion, and then we had to listen for a straight blast,
an undilating sound, etc..whatever the codes were(and Ive forgotten what they are...)but I think the straigh blast without warbling meant somesort of Civil Defense War warning..
BUT.. for about 15 to 20 seconds one got the be jeebers scared out of them till we firgured out what they were...
IS it a good idea for small towns to restore their sirens, or to continue them if they have them?
Traditionalists say yes..but this blogger says no! I want to see "Exactly" where each pitch is in relationship to the other instruments. For that reason, as well as being pianistic in nature, I may re-copy certain sections of interest to put all parts in "concert"...
all the same key that it sounds in when it is heard)I may even copy the bass part way down low or the piccolo part way up high, cause these sound automatically lower and higher by an octave respectively.

Enough of my rambling! Hope you enjoyed it!

Steveo

Please visit my sister blogs:
Dailysteveo
www.steveowenmobileblogger232.blogspot.com

Miimizan
http://zitbagblog.blogspot.comrex "steveo" mojohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07424729561472845469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12385193.post-2695442230730154362010-08-16T05:54:00.000-07:002010-08-16T06:07:46.016-07:00Mood Altering ColorsSAYING OF THE DAY:

A daily guest is a thief in the kitchen.
Proverb

BLOG OF THE DAY:

Mood Altering Colors

Hi,
Today Im blogging about "color " in our lives...and the role it
plays in establishing our moods...
I will relate to you a story abot my father, and when we lived in the same house..
He had a 9 to 5 job where he punched the clock everyday, and after awhile, of course, it became somewhat monotonous...This affected his moods in the morning while preparing for work.At the time, I was doing an experiment called "sleep learning" and would have him switch on a tape recorder right before he left as my schedule was opposite of his...Even though I slept during the morning hours, I did "interface" with him for a few minutes before I went to bed and he went to work...

Anyway, one day at the 99 cent store I saw some colorful poster sheets that were nothing fancy, just plain solid colors.
I dug thru my wallet and ended up purchasing a few....I got them home,
and one was bright pink. This one I decided I would display in the kitchen where DAd prepared his breakfast each morning before going to work..I just hung it on the wall by itself...kind of a random statement of color.
After a few days, I noticed he was more cheerful! So what happened was it subconciously affected his mood....
Many us have "color schemes" in life, not only from ourselves and our surroundings, but our mates..the colors they wear everyday...I must admit to you that these
colors affect me...my gf wore "black" for many years,(one of her favorite colors) and while it was commanding, it also made me feel kind of "bleak" at times...now that she is older she is "Breaking up" the color schemes more and I find Im
liking it a lot better...
Whats your favorite color? Is it reflected in your daily life, and what effect does it have on you and others?
Next time you start to wonder why your moods are the way they are, aside from all the troubles that are present in the world, also consider "colors"...you will be surprised the role they play!

Steveo

P.S. Famous jazz musician Duke Ellington's favorite color was "blue!"

VISIT MY SISTER BLOGS:

Dailysteveo
www.steveowenmobileblogger232.blogspot.com

Miimizan

http://zitbagblog.blogspot.comrex "steveo" mojohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07424729561472845469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12385193.post-47858858013883436962010-08-05T06:24:00.000-07:002010-08-05T06:31:20.207-07:00THE GREAT VARIETY SHOWSSAYING OF THE DAY:

Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are good is like expecting the
bull not to charge because you are a vegetarian

BLOG OF THE DAY: THE GREAT VARIETY SHOWS

Hello All,
Here to talk abou THE GREAT "VARIETY SHOWS" that the
tv networds did back in the 50s and 60s...A proposition, as Carol Burnett
has noted, that got too "Expensive" to produce by the late 60's...(although her own
show was carried on into the 70's)

Starting in the early 50's and continuing for at least a decade or so, the idea of
having kind of a well rounded "vaudeville show"
built around a star entertainer(usually a comedian)was thought to
be what the public wanted, and indeed it was...
PEople were able to stay home from the movies, and with the purchase of a
Tv Set(most were expensive for that time, a few were not)
they could be entertained on any night of the week for an hour or half hour - a re-occuring or "sustaining" show...Weekends being a prime time for these types of shows...A wisecracking comedian such as Red Skelton - a genius if there ever was one - would stand and entertain you with his pantomimes, jokes, and banter, and then after awhile, this would give way to an attractive dancing troup hoofing their way through big "production numbers"...usually they
lip synced a song they were singing to a group of 8 singers in the backround(not seen) as they danced. As if this wasn't enough, a special "guest star" would appear on each show, it was usually a famous singer or a Hollywood actor who was willing to try their ability at joining in on sketches involving the principal star as well as promote their latest song.
Production values for this type of show were "big." Lots of money was spent on
costumes, sets, tv cameras with booms, and orchestras led by savvy conductors
of renown in the light "pop" field..David Rose and Paul Weston come to mind.
People got used to being entertained by the best in the business...JAckie Gleason,
Milton Berle, Steve Allen, the list goes on and on...
But as the dawn of a new era appraoched in the mid 60's, the counter culture
values crept into society...
The networks now realized that they could produce programs that wern't so expensive,
based on the so called "relavancy" of certain personalities such as the Smothers
Brothers, etc.(even tho it was a paired down pseudo version of a variety show featuring singers, etc.)and Laugh-In(remember that?)
This became the death knell for the "variety show" and the older all-round
entertainers whos shows were "cancelled"began to resent the networks for dropping
their shows, and their type of entertainment..
Perhaps it was a format that needed a rest, but after a few years, despite a few
shows that featured some "hip" current personalities, they began to be sorely missed..
Such shows are never seen in this day and age..We do have our DVD's, video tapes
and films of these shows from the past, and I, for one, enjoy watching them as relief to a lot of the hideous programing that pervades the "air" today...
"Dream Along with me!(Im on my way to the stars-(Perry Como)

Steveo

PLease visit my sister blogs:

Dailysteveo

www.steveowenmobileblogger232.blogspot.com

Miimizan

http://zitbagblog.blogspot.comrex "steveo" mojohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07424729561472845469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12385193.post-33799198853820607702010-07-29T08:16:00.000-07:002010-07-29T13:48:26.549-07:00Dark ShadowsSAYING OF THE DAY:

If we let things terrify us, life will not be worth living.

BLOG OF THE DAY:

Dark Shadows

1966 was a watershed year for tv shows...meaning some
excellent and different ideas manifested into new tv programs..I
dont know what it was, it may have been the counterculture's
influence, or just a strange time when young producers came
into fruition, but many good shows started to appear. The
Monkees, Mission Impossible, Star trek etc.
It was at this time that a young entrepaneur got the go ahead
or green light from ABC to institute a different type of show.
The producer was able to worm his way into daytime
soap opera territory with a contemporary idea that had never
been tried. The man was "Dan Curtis" and the concept was
to do a 5 day a week live (on tape) show with "gothic"
overtones...The show was taped at ABC TV in New York for those of you who are wondering where it originated from.

Based on an imaginary town in New England called Collinsport
The title of the series was to be called "Dark Shadows"...
At first there was just kind of a sinister side about this well to
do family that lived in an old mansion,(the head of the family had some dark secrets)

but through the writers, SAm Hall being one of them, the idea
for a strange and mysterious visitor who also happened to be a vampire
in disguise came on the scene. His name was Barnabas, and he
was to take this mediocre(at first)
series and turn it upside down with the love from the pubic
for his character.
So now, Dan Curtis and his people had something..A "twist" to
the typical soap opera...A Gothic Vampire show done as a daily
series!
I must say that while the concept was a breakthrough, there is
one name that made the series what it was...The young middle
aged shakesperean actor, Jonathan Frid...(Barnabas)
His looks and his acting abilty were to set the tone for the 5
year run on the show and propelled it to what it was to become.
The shows producers were lucky to find a few other actors that
were to help meld the shows popularity...The lovely and
charming Katheryn Leigh Scott, who played "Maggie"
a young woman living at the maniosn Collingwood, while working as a waitress.
She really developed into a very good soap actress...
And then we have the excellent Stage actor Thayer David, who
played several wonderful roles as a middle aged heavy set man.
As I said earlier The beginning of the series was rather normal
and in it we had 2 excellent actors, JOan Bennet, and Louis Edmonds,
who played brother and sister living at Collingwood.
In fact, the gothic side(vampire theme)did not come into existance until
at least a year later, when Jonathan Frid joined the show.

It was this time when all seemed to start coming together, that Curtis and his staff augmented the cast with some fine actors..
Televison was also going thru a change to "color" and this show
was caught up in that excitement, switching to chroma after a couple of years of inititally being seen in black and white.
The first part of the vampire scenario were the best seasons for the show, and then the writers who were searching for something to keep the show going, hit upon the idea of going to a different "timeline" utilizing the same actors in
different roles..I dont know, but I think this kind of eventually brought the show down. I know the actors tired of it after awhile, and was getting to be surrealisitc, if not downright corny.
For example, the fine character actress Grayson Hall who originally
was brought in to play psychiatrist Dr Julia Hoffman,
later had to "switch roles" and play, of all things, some sort
of Hungarian gypsy named MAgda!(in a different time line)
I want to make mention of the "neat" original music by Robert
Cobert throughout the series..
Not a lot of music, just specific, effective little cues, that
enhanced the show..they were used repeatedly, and became kind
of an identification with the show. The title theme was
excellent as well..
Suprisingly, Mr. Cobert had a hit record with his composition Quintin's Theme
recorded by by Charles Grean based on yet another good actor
in the series played by David Selby. Selby was a good looking
man who played kind of a silent ghost who hanted the children in the mansion.
He kind of looked like Elvis Presley!, had long sideburns and
did not speak during the first couple of seasons of the
show, until they went into back into time.(parallel time lines)

All in all, after 3 or 4 years, the show started to stray
abit. It was ineveitable that script ideas were to grow thin.
After the shows end, Curtis was able to strike a deal for a
couple of full length Theatrical movies, the first one
Jonathan Frid participated in, but on the second, he demured,
and did not participate. I think Jon was getting very tired of
his role.
Through the years since the killing off of the show, it has
been brought back by popular demand on cable tv(Sci FI channel, etc)...The show was
never desinged for reruns, as it was shot on the impermanent
medium of video tape, and those tapes sat on the shelf for many
years, before being transferred or remastered onto new tape
stock...We are lucky to have the show at all
since the modus of most soap operas of that time were to reuse
the tapes or eventually "deep 6" them.

SO the show survives now... the look of the video tapes are
a bit soft, and dim...this due partially to the state of videotape then,
but mostly to the deterioration of the tapes.
some are Black and white kinescopes(films made from tv monitors
using special equipment) but all epsiodes (except one) are
available for purchase on dvd...
Fans gather once a year at the Dark Shadows festival for
several days, and the featured guests are the cast of the show, including Mr. Frid...Most of the cast are still alive..
The last coulpe of these festivals have been held in Burbank, Ca. and before that they were held in New Jersey..
So fans, even fans that were not even born when the show originally aired, continue to embarce this highly original soap that aired on first run so long ago..
an eerie show by the name of..."Dark Shadows" (cue music) lol

CAST Of Dark Shadows:

Barnabas(main vampire) Jonathan Frid
MAggie Evans(young woman; main hottie) Katherine Leigh Scott
Victoria Winters(another young hottie:Anlexandra Moltke
Barnabas' unwilling assistant: JOhn Karlen
BRother and sister- Matriarch and Patriarch at the mansion:
Joan Bennett and Louis Edmonds(both deceased now)
Dr. Stokes: Thayer David(deceased)
Dr. Julia Hoffman: Greyson Hall(deceased)
Young boy at mansion: David Henesey
Jason McGuire-;'nerdowell that marries JOan Bennett for money:Dennis Patrick(deceased)
MAggies father Sam Evans: David Ford(deceased)
Part Ghost, part werewolf Quentin: David Selby
Yet another hottie whom you all know: Kate JAckson(Charlies Angels)
Hottie no. 3(Carolyn) NAncy Barrett
Angelique: Lara Parker
and many others..
Show directed by Sam Hall and Lela Swift
produced by Dan Curtis..

Steveo

vist my sister blogs:

DailySteveo

www.steveowenmobileblogger232.blogspot.com

Miimizan

http://zitbagblog.blogspot.comrex "steveo" mojohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07424729561472845469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12385193.post-48167194069688751152010-07-27T11:04:00.000-07:002010-07-27T11:08:42.895-07:00Remolding Older TunesSAYING OF THE DAY:

Love is like a puzzle. When you’re in love, all the pieces fit but when your heart gets broken, it takes a while to get everything back together.
- Author Unknown

BLOG OF THE DAY:

Remolding Older Tunes

As a musician, I have recently been called upon to
"Re-tool" some oldies..."update them" so to speak
Despite the fact that many times, I like the original
recording or arrangement, and feel it shouldnt be tampered with,
sometimes people want me to help them do a "alternate concept"

on them..After all, to put it out again, ya have to do a
"different" version"

My brother (whom is a singer and guitar player) and I are faced
with such a challenge to come, as we are going to
try and "re-tool" an old surf vocal by the Sunrays..A Beach
Boy type surf group from 1966 who sang..
The tune is called "You DOn't Phase me" and is a brilliant
tune, musically, far ahead of its time with the chord changes...
The words are more adolescant, and not as great as the music, but hey!
(Composer: Hial King)Unfortuneatly, it is not a song remembered
today, but that kind of works to our advantage.

But it poses a problem, as the very life of it is rooted in
the surf sound, including the rhythms and high Beach Boy type
vocals that were popular back in the day...
As I look at the tune, the first thing I have to do, is try and
"pitch it" in a key wich wont turn the singer into an instant Vienna Choir boy!lol
Then after that, the "Feel" of the song needs to be re-interpeted for
a more modern rendition...this is the most difficult part...
The rhythm track, feeaturing the guitars, and bass, etc..
Then after that, we conceptualize how the "new" vocals will be, including what harmonies to use..and lastly
it falls upon me to "orchestrate the track with synthisied
strings , woodwinds, and horns...
We had a project recently whereby we re-recorded a demo that
was never released commercially during its time, even tho I
recorded it with its composer back in 1973..
I am happy to say it turned out real well, and you can hear that recording
eventually on my brothers website. DavesArtistry.com
There have been times when i have re-arranged stuff for myself
that didnt work out, or even tunes I wrote from scratch that
that I ended up junking...such is the life of a composer/arranger.
My brother is an excellent musician, so working with him is a
pleasure, and it is always nice to bounce ideas back and forth
with others...
Stay tuned for the outcome of this one!

Steveo

Please visit my "sister" blogs:

DailySteveo

www.steveowenmobileblogger232.blogspot.com

Miimizan

http://zitbagblog.blogspot.comrex "steveo" mojohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07424729561472845469noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12385193.post-79165228520581588972010-07-25T10:14:00.000-07:002010-07-25T10:18:38.483-07:00I FeelSAYING OF THE DAY:

A criminal is a person with predatory instincts who has not
sufficient capital to form a corporation.

BLOG OF THE DAY:

I Feel

I Feel
Sad, that one of my longtime friends on the web has stopped
responding...

I feel
Happy I was able to get the damn table that my gf bought- out of
my car...It barely fit from the store, and when we got it home,
we couldnt get it out..I had to dis assemble it in the car..lol

I feel
Happy, thinking about some former times, long long ago...

I feel
Neutral about some of the problems Ive been having

I Feel
Happy that I can sit at the new table outside on the balcony
and do whatever..

I feel
Sad that all the work I have done on my blog gets seen by so
few...

I Feel
Thankful to God for all the blessings he has bestowed, although
there have been a lot of minuses..
(I think we all have them)

I Feel
Happy that Bp is finally getting a handle on this oil leak,
and glad the government stepped in.

I Feel
Mixed emotions about Obama...I was glad he got in, But I
question some of his leadership...
I thought he was going to be "inspiring"? It was very popular on daytime television as a daily
rerun in the 80's....
I must admit I havent seen it around lately..perhaps it is out there
somewhere.
It wasn't a great show...jut some random tableaus by random directors..
no regular cast members, but a guest star each week with various tv
stars meandering thru it.The show ran on ABC for about 5 years -
Sept 1969 to JAn 11, 1974, and the premise was the comedy predicaments
that lovers would get themselves into, there were usually a couple of
different stories included in each epsiode. There were also blackout skits.

The theme song is memorable, and that I remember by heart..
I thought I would mention a few people who started or ended their career after eappearing on it.
Foist of all!(first of all, lol)

There was the teenage actress Debbie Watson, who did a lot of tv in the mid 60's but by the time the learly 70's rolled around, she decided she didnt want to be in tv
or movies anymore. so one of the last things she did was "Love Amercian Stryle"
One of the earliest things Cissy Spacek did, was appear on LAS as well
As you all know, she became a very famous actress, her most famous roll
probably being "Carrie"..
Lets look at some of the other people who were on the show...

Larry Kert
Arlene Golonka(remember her?)
Dick Gautier
Henry Gibson
Joe Anne Worley
Carol Wayne
Alice Ghostly
Lou Jacobi
Marilyn Mason
Stafanie Powers
Larry Storch
Rich Little
Jessica WAlter
Paul Winchell
Frank Sutton
Michele Lee
Bob Crane
Yvonne Craig
Edward Andrews
Phyllis Diller Robert Reed...
and many more!
so you see it was a series that a working actor or director could get a
job on, and many did...So if you like the bears and long hair, and the dress
style that was the early 70's.. much of that culture appears here in these tv shows.
I understand the DVD of all the seasons is now available.

Steveorex "steveo" mojohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07424729561472845469noreply@blogger.com0
